Composition

Ingredients: sodium alginate, sodium hydrogen carbonate, calcium carbonate, carbomer 974P, sodium saccharin, methyl parahydroxybenzoate, propyl parahydroxybenzoate, liquid peppermint flavor, sodium hydroxide, purified water

How does it work?

The medical device Gastimax®med, oral suspension combines the effects of three main ingredients – sodium alginate, sodium hydrogen carbonate and calcium carbonate and it has a physical mechanism of action that does not depend on absorption into the systemic circulation. Sodium alginate forms a protective layer on gastric mucosa and on gastric content, in the acidic medium of the stomach. Concomitantly, sodium hydrogen carbonate and calcium carbonate, in contact with hydrochloric acid from stomach, release carbon dioxide which mobilizes the layers of sodium alginate gel at the surface of gastric content. Thus, a protective layer of gel is formed, blocking the reflux of gastric content into esophagus.

In severe cases the gel itself may be refluxed into the esophagus, in preference to the stomach contents and exerts a demulcent effect. Additionally, sodium hydrogen carbonate and calcium carbonate neutralize the excess of stomach acid.
